On the day before New years eve, we were invited to a students house to meet his family and make dumplings. We had a fantastic day and the family were very inviting and kind to us, they made us feel extremely welcome. Later on that evening we were invited to Mr and Mrs Ma's house (a VIP in Shaoyang to have dinner with the foreign teachers and his family. It was an a truly amazing experience and we were treated like superstars. Mr Ma's parents were the kindest lovable couple and I have now got adopted grandparents!
On New years eve we walked up to the park to watch the fireworks being set off. Hunan is the Chinese capital for fireworks so you can imagine the display!! Hundreds of families gathered and brought thousands of fireworks some of them in boxes that were up to our waist... it was an immense show and very loud! We left about 10.30 pm got home, thawed out and went up onto the roof to watch the midnight display... If you can imagine the biggest, organised display you have ever seen and times it by 20 displays being set off at once, you may come close!!!!!!! The Chinese sure know how to celebrate the new year and I am so pleased we could be here to share it with them. It will certainly be a memory we will cherish :) Today is the start of the celebrations (Traditions) of Chinese new year. People start decorating their houses and the big house clean up starts. Lanterns are hung around the streets so everywhere looks beautiful. The roads are crazy as over a billion people are going home to visit their families. Dishes are being prepared for huge family feasts.
