Well the good has to be payday (wop woop) and Jaz getting rid of his lurgy, the bad has to be me having the lurgy and well the ugly has to be the miserable weather........
Well, hello again and welcome to the latest installment of our China adventure!
We arrived in Yangshou and completed the usual tests and regulatory procedures (medicals and registering with the police) and were given our marching orders to our new assignments. After our 4 hour bus journey through mountains and beautiful rural scenery we arrived at Luizhang train station. This is where we were catching our very first train in China. We had tickets for hard sleepers and we were a little unsure of what to expect, having heard many different stories about travelling by train, but this was to be our home for the next 12 hours! So after the massive crush to get through the gates and onto the train we finally found our pods at the end of the train. Each pod has 6 bunk beds. With 2 huge suitcases we were very short of storage space and had to leave them in in the aisle, most people just moved around them and were not bothered. The train left on time 2300 hrs and as soon as our heads hit the pillow we were soothed off to sleep with the motion of the train. I woke up at 6 am with the early morning alarm call through the carriages. Jared's experience was that the beds were long enough even for his long legs and very comfortable. People on the train were very friendly even though you were bumping into each other and sharing breathing space...lol. I even got offered food and played peek a boo with little children while they were sitting waiting for their stop. We arrived at Tongzi station at 12.30 pm Monday. After finding our way to the exit we awaited our FAO Sunny who was to meet us there. Sunny is a very lovely English teacher from our school which is Number 1 High school Tongzi. Sunny took us to the driver and explained we would be staying in a hotel for a few days until our apartment was ready. Once booked into our very nice hotel we were told to rest for the day and she would see us tomorrow (Tuesday) Later that evening we had a knock on our door and found 7 policemen outside our room. We immediately called Sunny as they didn't speak English. She explained that after the terrible occurrence in Kunming train station the police had been informed of 2 foreigners arriving by train and the locals were worried about a re-occurrence. The police tracked us down and wanted to know why we were there. Sunny explained everything to them and they left quite happy. They were very nice to us despite the language barrier and it just goes to show how much we stick out in this province and how great the Chinese security forces are. The next day Sunny registered us with the police and took us to the school to meet with our headmaster and vice principal. They showed us around the school and unfinished apartment and made us feel very welcome. We also got our timetable for teaching the next day. Later that evening we were taken out for a very nice meal with the heads of school. |
